System Mechanics: Size and Range

The distance that one character or creature can reach is proportional to their size and speed.  If a character extremely small but fast, they can dart in with an attack and back in order to try to avoid retaliation.  A larger character may move slower, but their range is wide due to the length of their attacking appendage and length of stride.  As such, their range may be the same as one that moves faster but is smaller.  In order to determine the range of a character, first the size must be factored.  The longest dimension of a character or creature--regardless of whether that is its height, length or width--is to be considered for grouping it by its size type.  The groupings for character, creatures and other assorted things being described are as follows:

Miniscule: Less than 1 inch in size.
Diminutive: 1 to 2 inches in size.
Miniature:  2 to 3 inches in size.
Meager:  3 inches to 5 inches in size.
Tiny: 5 to 8 inches in size.
Little: 8 to 12 inches in size.
Minute: 12 to 18 inches in size.
Small: 18 to 27 inches in size.
Modest: 27 to 41 inches in size.
Medium: 41 to 62 inches in size.
Large: 62 to 93 inches in size.
Huge: 93 to 140 inches in size.
Massive: 140 to 210 inches in size.
Enormous: 210 to 473 inches in size.
Colossal: 473 to 710 inches in size.
Monumental: 710 to 1065 inches in size.
Gigantic: 1065 to 1598 inches in size.
Humongous: 1598 to 2397 inches in size.
Unfathomable is over 2397 inches in size.

Every grouping's stride is half its max size.  If a character has a small size their stride is 14 inches.  This is the distance covered by a speed of 1 within a single step.  With a speed of 10, then while running a small character covers 140 inches or 12 feet ran within a single turn.  Half of this is a character's defensive range, and the full amount is considered the offensive range.  Additions or reductions in standard ranges can come from special traits or abilities, or specific types of equipment, such as having a sword versus a bare fist.

(Size/2 + Speed + Modifications) = Offensive Range.

((Size/2 + Speed)/2 + Modifications) = Defensive Range

If a character attacks outside of their range, the attack does not land.  Certain abilities, such as casting a beam attack, or equipment such as guns, far extend the range of attack beyond that of the character's default range while they are in use.  Any attack against an opponent requires either line of sight or an area of effect modifier if there is an obstacle in the way.
